My name is Ricardo Rios. From Kindergarten to 8th grade I went to school in Valley Center. I went to Orange Glen High School in Escondido. I then went to college at the University of California Santa Barbara. I majored in Film, Chicano Studies, and Spanish. I then decided to get my teacher credential at California State University Northridge. I took all the coursework to become a teacher but I could not complete the student teaching portion for financial reasons. Several years later when I tried to complete my credential I was told that I would have to complete the credential program over again because the courses I had taken had expired. I don't really remember if I liked school. I liked some classes more than others. I liked some teachers more than others. School was never really hard for me. Although I got good grades I wasn't ever the smartest student. I was simply a good learner and I just did my work.
I don't really know yet where I fall on the technology continuum. I first started learning how to use a computer in high school. There I learned how to use email, how to surf the internet, and how to use online chatting programs. At that time we had to use Microsoft Word for writing papers but that's the online thing I knew how to do on Word and not a lot else. I am really excited about the technology revolution in general and in education. In high school I was not able to connect to my peers as easily as young people do today. Social media sites like Facebook have allowed me to connect to a lot of people from my past. I also enjoy using twitter for following interesting people online. I blog about interesting subjects to me. I also use technology at work often. I update the company website, I manage our social media sites, and I sometimes facilitate a workshop about using Linkedin to connect to other professionals. I also facilitate a workshop called Occupations in Demand where we teach people how to find labor market data and how to use online training services. I am very comfortable with technology and am also excited about using it in the classroom.
I believe in the school of education's mission statement and it is a reason I wanted to come to this university. The part that spoke to me was regarding promoting innovative and creative teaching strategies. I am a person that likes to think outside the box and I hope I am allowed the flexibility to implement new teaching strategies using technology.
Rick, you poor thing! I cannot even imagine having to go through the credential program twice! Like yourself, I am not to tech savvy when it comes to integrating technology in the classroom seeing as I only know that basics from years ago. But, I can manage it in my personal and work life so I think it is possible to learn. It seems like you do a lot of social media management for work so I am sure that will be a lot of help to you during this program. I think it is great that you were drawn to this program and school due to its mission statement. The fact that you are an outside of the box type person will help you provide a creative classroom environment that I am sure will keep students engaged and interested. What program at CSUSM will you be in?
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading Hannah. I'll be in the single subject (Spanish/Social Science) BCLAD program. : )
DeleteRick,
ReplyDeleteWow this is very surprising and sad that you have to re-do (and worse, re-pay) your credential.Figuring out where we are on the education technology continuum is difficult. I'm noticing that it's quite relative. Some of us are better than others, and sometimes we're better than others but nowhere near where we want to be. Have you considered how you want to utilize social media tools for your classroom? You mentioned facebook, and surely the students would love that, but I wonder how we might be able to use it in a meaningful way. I hope all of your experience in technology will inform your classroom usage of it. It seems like you have a great deal of knowledge. I hope you don't mind if I use you as a resource for this class!
Justin it was really disappointing when I found out I had to re-do and re-pay for a teaching credential program again. Its just something I was naive about and nobody ever told me so here I am am. : )
DeleteWow you did a lot at CSU Santa Barbara! So did you have three majors? Unfortunately schools make classes "expire" which I like to think of as a conspiracy to sucking more money out of students to keep them coming back and spending money! That's just me though... I am also going to be going through the BCLAD program, but I'll be going for the Multiple subject credential, but hey maybe you could help me out with brushing up on my Spanish! You seem like you would do great with incorporating technology in your classroom, and I have no doubt you will have a lot to offer your students!
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth I am just checking replies. I did triple major. I am sure we can help each other in this class.
DeleteRIck, Ugh, I'm so sorry you are having to re-do some coursework. It's such a shame when money gets in the way of education. I'm pretty sure I'll be paying for my education until I retire. There's something wrong with that. Your work with social media is great. You'll be a good voice of experience when we talk about that in a few sessions and how it fits in to the workplace.
ReplyDeleteYeah it was tough when I found out I had to re-do the teaching credential program. I am looking forward to the conversation about social media in the workplace. At my job they've embraced it.
